Differentiated Double Burner System  10.5 meters/600mpm DDBS JANUARY 2017 esseCI is proud to announce the delivery of two new generation DDBS (Differentiated Double Burner System) machines to our valued customer Jindal – Jindal Films Europe (JFE) and Jindal Films Americas (JFA). These two treaters will be installed on 10.5meters Dornier BOPP lines, running up to 600mpm. Jindal has chosen again to benefit from highest and longest lasting surface adhesion treatment technique in the BOPP world. First esseCI flame treater supplied to this company (originally Mobil Plastics) was 35 years ago in the U.S., on a 3.0 meters wide BOPP line, running at maximum 180mpm. Polyolefin film for Food Packaging It is necessary to improve the barrier properties of polyolefin films to use them as materials for food packaging. The flame treatment allows to cover them also with lacquers very difficult to apply as those water-based     Surface Activation of Polyolefin Substrates, by Flame Treatment   The flame treatment, a valuable alternative to corona treatment, allows to cover them also with lacquers very difficult to apply as those water-based. These are the results of the researchers team of Distam – Department of Food and Microbiologic Sciences and Technologies, Università degli Studi in Milan, who studied the effect of the flame treatment depending on the kind of used gas and of the wrinkles on the polyolefin substrate. More in details, in the first part of testing the flame treatment was made on polypropylene cast small plates (thickness 1mm) using three different fuels (methane, butane and propane) raw or mixed with air. Afterwards it was decided to consider the influence of the substrate topography using small plates with 3 different levels of wrinkles. The samples under examination were then flame treated keeping the three main process parameters steady (distance from the flame, mixture air/gas, treatment time). In any case the effect of the treatment was quantified setting the contact angle to the interface solid/liquid/air and defining the surface energy expressed in dyne cm-1.   The printing, coating and bonding of plastics requires the surface to be pre-treated.   Flame treatment is one way to achieve this so-called activation. It is currently being used in many industrial sectors and has considerable potential for development. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in Potsdam and the Italian company esse CI flame treaters are uniting their expertise in surface chemistry and machine engineering in order to clearly expand the opportunities provided by flame treatment and to extend the range of surface properties. Interested companies can take part in the development of this technology and help advance its industrialization. In order to facilitate the industrialization of this new generation of flame treatment systems, interested companies are invited to take part this year in the project. They can influence the detailed planning, for example, of materials and process parameters, and receive first-hand information and research results.
