Flame Treatment for Paper and Cardboard

It is today the most used treatment for paper and cardboard, which can replace all other treatments. In the United States it is the most frequently used system to improve adhesion with other polymeric materials. It is necessary to underline the important development of this technology introduced by the “esseCI”, compared to the competition.

The most important improvements are:

  • The use of a combustion analyzer, in order to regulate and therefore constantly monitor the temperature and the composition of the flame;
  • The use of a chromed and thermostatically controlled treatment roll.
The advantages due to the combustion analyzer are:
  • Temperature and flame composition adjustable in a range from 110 to 1900 ° C, in order to have different possibilities of free 02 on the different chemical compositions of paper and cardboard.
The advantages due to the thermostatic treatment roll are:
  • The possibility of heating or cooling paper or cardboard passing over the surface of the roller, so as to determine the right process conditions for the selected material;
  • The certainty that the paper / cardboard always passes at the same distance from the flame (and there are no variations in the gap);
  • The reduction of the distance in an interval of 4 – 6 mm. (depending on the speed of the line) saves energy by comparing with the consumption of other systems, where the gap is much larger, at least twice.

This solution is not a new idea or an experiment, but comes from experience in thin plastic films, where this type of plant is widely used for the treatment of polypropylene and polyethylene.

Its extension to paper and cardboard has been natural and constitutes a real step forward in the technology and in the extrusion coating process. In fact the obtained benefits deriving from the analyzer (different flame compositions, or possibility of temperature) and from the treatment roller (heating or cooling paper / cardboard) produce an extreme flexibility of the “esseCI” system, which allows to treat without any problem any type of material, especially very thin paper, with improved quality, economic savings (large reduction in gas consumption) and increased production (extrusion speed increases by about 20%).


The ``EsseCI`` flame treatment system has been applied on paper and cardboard with the following results:
  • Elimination of hairs and small growths that may be present on the surface;
  • Elimination of moisture or evaporation of water, which could cause air bubbles between the two layers to be coupled;
  • Decontamination of any oils or fats present, due to previous contact with plastic surfaces;
  • Creation of bonds on the surface to be coupled due to free oxygen in the flame. The material oxidizes on the surface and the adhesion with the other material is thus improved.
