Flame Treatment for Converting Line

The flame treatment system for the Converting Industry is comprised of a mixture generator with integrated electric panel and operator panel for the automation and control of the equipment, along with the treatment station unit. The system designed to operate with all common industrial combustible gases is equipped with automatic ignition and continuous flame detection. It includes safety devices to detect any fault, as per European regulations.

The online system permits broad integration with the production line machinery on which it is installed, meaning it can be managed from the main console. The EsseCI Treatment Station is equipped with an analysis unit and continuous control of the operating mixture composition.

Surface Flame Treatment on Paper and Cardboard

Applied on paper and cardboard, the EsseCI flame treatment system provides the following results:

  • Removal of fuzz and small imperfections that may be present on the surface;
  • Elimination of humidity or evaporation of water that could cause air bubbles between the laminated layers;
  • Decontamination of oils or fats that may be present due to previous contact with metallic surfaces;
  • Creation of bonds on the surface to be coupled thanks to the free oxygen in the flame.

The material oxidises the surface and thus improves the adhesion other materials.

Extrusion coating and flame treatment conversion system hardware composition

In reference to the following image depicting an extrusion coating line and following that outlined above, it is clear to see that flame treatment systems can be beneficially applied both prior and after PE extrusion.

The first burner station is for pre-treatment which prepares the paper/paperboard substrates for the following extrusion step. Thanks to design of the treater roll, it is possible to warm up the substrate (to significantly improve the PE melt adhesion), whilst maintaining the correct moisture content inside the paper itself. In this way, the paper will be not too dry nor too humid during the extrusion step, resulting in maximised adhesion.

The presence of the treater roll permits operating with the flame very close to the substrate surface (at a distance of a few millimetres), focusing the combustion energy atop and diminishing energy losses to the surrounding environment (EsseCI treaters are reported to burn a fifth of the gas compared to competitor systems). The second burner station, downstream from the extrusion step, treats the polymer surface in order to obtain excellent adhesion for the subsequent printing, coating and metallising phases, as mentioned prior.
