Flame Treatment For Food Packaging

In paper and cardboard applications for coupling in the converting industry, our flame treaters prepare the surfaces of materials in the best possible way before it is coupled with extruded PE, thus eliminating all surface impurities (fuzz, etc). It is also possible to check for the proper amount of moisture in the paper, thus preventing excessive drying of the material, which can generate dangerous surface breakage of the paper.

A further advantage in the use of flame treatment for paper, even before coupling with PE, is that of being able to considerably reduce the temperature of the extruded PE and its specific quantity. If the treatment is applied AFTER the process of coupling with extruded PE, the flame polarises the surface layer of PE and renders the surface ready to be re-coupled with any other successive layers or alternative materials.

In the case of aluminium foil, flame treatment allows to degrease and/or clean the surface from pollutants that can contaminate the surface after the production process.

Then the surface flame treatment can be used to treat plastic film, paper and aluminium for:
PLASTIC FILM

to improve adhesion on coating with extruded PE, and to treat the surface before print

PAPER AND CARDBOARD

of various grades and weights to improve surface adhesion, before the coating with other materials, as well as for softening and adjusting humidity.

METALLIZED PAPER

to treat the surface of laminating coils or foils (usually in aluminium) to clean their surface from dirty oil or lamination grease.

The flame treatment system is ideal for treatment of:
  • LPB (liquid packaging board)
  • COATED PAPER: LWC, MFC, WFC, Art Paper
  • POLY COATED PAPER
  • SBS COATED FOR WET STRENGHT
  • CUK FOR WET STRENGHT

Extrusion coating and converting flame treatment system hardware composition

In reference to the following image depicting an extrusion coating line and following that outlined above, it is clear to see that flame treatment systems can be beneficially applied both prior and after PE extrusion.

The first burner station is for pre-treatment which prepares the paper/paperboard substrates for the following extrusion step. Thanks to design of the treater roll, it is possible to warm up the substrate (to significantly improve the PE melt adhesion), whilst maintaining the correct moisture content inside the paper itself. In this way, the paper will be not too dry nor too humid during the extrusion step, resulting in maximised adhesion.

The presence of the treater roll permits operating with the flame very close to the substrate surface (at a distance of a few millimetres), focusing the combustion energy atop and diminishing energy losses to the surrounding environment (EsseCI treaters are reported to burn a fifth of the gas compared to competitor systems). The second burner station, downstream from the extrusion step, treats the polymer surface in order to obtain excellent adhesion for the subsequent printing, coating and metallising phases, as mentioned prior.
